What I want to see in ATLA live action remake
- Fixing plot holes
- Improve the writing quality to make the storytelling more consistent and logical
- Explore the characters who didn’t get much expanding in the animated series (Iroh, Suki, Azula, Lu Ten, Ursa, Ozai as well he’s the main villain…est)
- Explore the Avatar world more (e.g. we get to know more about energy-bending)
- The finale battle victory shouldn’t be as rushed and forced
What I don’t want to see in ATLA live action remake
- Creating shitty love triangles (Zuko-Katara-Aang mainly)
- Retcons (that include in characterzations and world building)
- Add more unnecessery violence/drama for dark, edgy cliche tropes that will only ruin the story and its characters (especially regarding the take on Zuko and Azula here, unless it was in-line with their canon behavior)
They already placed the live action in the kids-show category on netflix. I doubt there will be any added violence or gore to the show. Love triangles will probably also not be a thing, since there was never any romantic tension between zuko and katara in the first place, and I’m sure bryke intends to keep it that way.
I very much agree with everything you do want to see, except I don’t really understand the whole “the final battle victory should be less forced”, because to me that didn’t feel forced or rushed at all, especially not in the 25min episode format bryke had to stick to, but opinions differ *shrugs*
– [“They already placed the live action in the kids-show category on netflix. I doubt there will be any added violence or gore to the show.”] for that I’m relieved, but “unecessery drama/violence that only serves in destroying the story and its characters” has other meaning too; is the approach that’s opposite to “meaningful, inconsistent expanding” (that probably contain retcons as well), like how any complexity, depth, rich characterzations and background info of Ursa and Ozai’s characters and their relationship could offer — either between them or with their children — got completely butchered and left out for the sake of unecessery cheap romantic plot that reduced Ursa to a typical damsel in distress with little personality who eventually end up with her running away with her “childhood lover” in Ursa’s story reveal in The Search (a drama story that was the source of ‘eye rolling’) … Maybe it’s only my fears, but I’m afraid some people in the New Team will contain shitty writers with the same un-knowledgeable, C rated fanfic-writing mentality as Gene Yang, by making the “untold stories” writing or reveal as cheap and inconsistent, since Bryke approved of his BS and even praise it, and since they already confirmed they’re going “deeper” with the characters and the avatar world.
Re-write for ATLA is a golden opportunity to make the show 100× better written if they brought up all the hidden/wasted potential and exploited it Properly, if they smooth over all the contradictions and make everything more consistent, make sense, deep and meangiful. I really, really hope they don’t waste it and that they make something they can be proud of.
– Bryan already acknowledge that Zuko and Katara shared some sparks, it’s not like they’re compelelty avoid of it. Granted, they may avoid ZK all together, but Bryke also like love triangles, they were planning to make one in ATLA with male!Toph-Katara-Aang but Aaron Ehasz stopped it. Then they go through with it in LoK, and tried to please the audience with making ZK-like ship with the Fire Nation boy falling for the Water Tribe girl, from the very first episode despite how forced it was. A push from outside invaders on the story who aren’t knowledgable enough about it or its characters (Netflix team) and only care about running business may push in for a fanservice subplot that only will hurt the relationships between the characters (an important element in the show). But maybe I’m a bit pessimistic here but I hope they leave Zuko-Katara canon intercations as they are, no need for romantic plot, no need to cut it out either.
– For the Finale Battle arc, I think “forced and rushed” weren’t the right words to use, what I mean is more 'strategic’. (ATLA is full of such moments but since it’s the finale victory for the good guys, it has to be better at least)

“Sozin’s Comet is arriving and our destinies are upon us! Aang will face the Fire lord. When I was a boy, I had a vision that I would one day take Ba Sing Se. Only now do I see, that my destiny is to take it back from the Fire Nation, so the Earth Kingdom can be free again.”
Honestly the sudical plan Iroh came up with is completely irrational and ridiculous especially that there are far better alternative options that can strategically ensure better results and minimizing the damage and failure chances to the point you can’t even believe it came out of a veteran General.
- Liberate Ba Sing Se with his small army DURING Sozin’s Comet passing is possibily the WORST timing ever. Even if his and Jeong Jeong’s firebending powers increased by the comet, it’s also the same for every single Fire Nation soldier, and they’re many. Liberate Ba Sing Se before the comet arrives is far better than waiting his enemies to have a power up. (maybe even after the comet arrives, it make the liberation easier for them either way)
- The White Lotus can help the Avatar Team taking down Ozai’s airships, with Iroh and Jeong Jeong’s firebending and Bumi earthbending they can destroy the airships from the ground more effectively.
- Iroh can split his team and send members to help Aang defeat (and possibly capture) Ozai.
Poor Aang got his ass wiped with floor and only won by plot device that put him in the Avatar State.
“Zuko, you must go return to the Fire Nation so that, when the Fire lord falls, you can assume the throne and restore peace and order. But Azula will be there, waiting for you…take someone (Katara) to help you battle her.”
> So he sending Zuko with minimal amount of help into the Fire Nation capital to face his tactical genius, firebending prodigy sister who manipulates and kicks his ass almost effortlessly everytime they meet, who also brushed his Agni Kai challenge back in the EK palace like a funny joke (things Iroh witnessed for solid several times during the show) and up against the Imperial Firebenders -who powered up by the comet which put Katara in disadvantage- and the Dai Li agents?
I think Zuko and Katara can help the rest of Team Avatar, it make no sense for Iroh to send Zuko to “assume the throne” when the chances for his capture and imprisonment on the other hand are higher. He has no idea that Azula may just start slipping and fire all her staff, not even his PoV in the novelization mentioned or suggested this, he just thought Azula is powerful and sly, so Katara (maybe) can help…
It’s so wrong to send Zuko and Katara to the Capital when almost all odds are against them. With Ozai’s defeat they probably can use him as leverage against Azula: giving up power for his life.
Now, what was rushed and narratively forced is Azula’s descent into madness. They either make the battle last a little longer after the Sozin’s Comet day, it gives us an opportunity to explore Azula more in this rate, we can see more of her inner conflict and childhood and her new mindset development and perosna, or either make her breakdown better written for her to break as soon as Ozai left her (as shown in the finale) and not simply mental illness spirals whenever it suits the plot. So, Iroh knows about that and take advantage of it, as Zuko shown to do it pre the Agni Kai fight: Zuko can fight impulsive and unhinged Azula his victory could be assured.
Zuko’s Agni Kai for the throne deserves to be mors legit battle, and not a battle considered to a great extent invalid. There should be witnesses, judges, Fire Nation people and all.
fuck this guy
These continents were already tamed by the indigenous inhabitants. And had been for tens of thousands of years.
Over 80% of the Native Americans were dead by diseases brought over by Columbus’ crew long before the Pilgrims arrived in North America. The Native Americans suffered an apocalyptic catastrophe that made the European Plague look like a bad cold season. This was not done on purpose but it was inevitable that it would have happened eventually.
So what we had here was a Post-Apocalyptic world being resettled by a technologically more advanced civilization. Anthropologically speaking, there was no other outcome possible but what occurred, not on the grander scale of it, anyway. That a bunch of political and religious refugees turned a culturally devastated land into the greatest bastion for freedom, self-rule, and scientific advancement this planet has ever seen is nothing to be sorry for.
Smallpox blankets
The effort to eradicate bison specifically to starve the Sioux
The trail of tears
Residential schools
Bounties for scalped Native Americans in Pennsylvania
The multiple broken treaties to respect Native Land
Please dont fucking act like Native genocide was some kind of unfortunate accident. It was a series of deliberate, violent acts that took advantage of the aftermath of the plagues Europeans brought with them.
“Refugees”
i love how white people like to act like they weren’t dying from dysentery and dumb as shit before they met us indigenous peoples. u fuckers couldn’t bathe your ass properly and u want to tell me u helped us “advance technologically?” we already had advanced structures and a method of doing things before u came here and infected us and assimilated our people. kindly shut the fuck up.
My dad was born in 1956 and remembers mysterious boxes showing up on their doorstep with food and blankets/clothes. They once gave the family dog the food and it died.
He also said people would try to hit his brothers and him with a car while they were walking to school.
His dad was allowed to die over appendicitis in a hospital. He suffered for days while the staff did NOTHING.
His uncles disappeared and the police did NOTHING. Their car was later found in a canyon, full of bullet holes. The bullets were military issue.
His eldest brother also died under mysterious circumstances.
My great grandmother, the last of our tribe to be born traditionally, outside, owned 5000 acres in northern California. Active imminent domain left her with 1 ACRE. Which they later took to build a post office.
That same grandma, who I’m named after, was kidnapped as a child and held as a slave in a white mans house. She had a wire put through her ear that tethered her so she could only go from her bedroom to the kitchen. Her dad found her and rescued her, ripping the thing out of her ear. My dad said her earlobe was forever split in two pieces.
In church when I was a kid people alienated my family and my dad got jokey death threats all the time. My mom, who was white, was told she was too good for my dad. I was told I was dark but I would hopefully lighten up if I stayed out of the sun. At school we read a story about a “drunken injun” and I cried in class while my classmates mockingly did a raindance and chanted. My first boyfriend said he wished he wasn’t a white guy because Indians get free college.
This shit was recent and current. Go look up suicide, sexual assault, and drug addiction statistics within Native American communities.
White people came to this country and slaughtered us. Your white ancestors did this. Maybe even your grandparents.
America wasn’t won, it was stolen. Native Americans aren’t better off because we have electricity. I’d rather have my people back.
Fuck Donald Trump. Fuck his voters. And fuck white people who try to downplay what happened here.
